Medical Tourism Is Booming
According to Medical Tourism Mexico, 1.2 million people from the United States travel to Mexico for health care each year. This makes Mexico the world's second most popular destination for medical tourism, following Thailand. Since Thailand is an expensive plane ticket away, Mexico is often the first place Americans turn to for affordable medical care.
While patients have turned to Mexico for affordable cosmetic surgery and elective procedures in the past, more people are choosing medical tourism to take advantage of low prices and the same quality of care for a variety of health care procedures. Now, Mexico caters to patients who desire affordable bariatric surgery, dental work, and more.

We Welcome Medical Tourists to Our Puerto Vallarta Destination
Making the decision to have gastric sleeve surgery with Dr Sergio Del Hoya was the best thing I've ever done... The price for the surgery included airport transportation, labwork, EKG, surgery, overnight stay in the hospital, leak check, my clear liquid meals at the hotel, a dietitian consultation and most of all I can call/text Dr Sergio Del Hoyo any time I have questions. His hospital staff was incredibly attentive, professional and caring. I am 6 day post-op with minimal discomfort, incisions healing well and feeling so positive. Just want to say thank you to Dr Sergio Del Hoyo and his staff for taking great care of me.
View On GoogleI was a bit skeptical about having surgery but I met a lady on the plane last year that had just had it done and followed her journey. She gave me all the info and no small amount of guidance. I felt well taken care of from the first time I spoke to Dr Sergio. He answered all my questions very quickly. He made sure I was well prepared and feeling confident about surgery. The facility is absolutely beautiful, exceptionally clean and the entire surgical team were wonderful! I was up walking around the unit within a couple hours and I was back at the condo the next day. I am so thankful to have found Dr. del Hoyo and I would highly recommend him to anyone.
View On GoogleA Spotlight on Our Tech:
Da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgery
We use the latest developments in the field of bariatrics to provide patients with safe, effective surgeries. The da Vinci® XI Surgical System is a robotic surgical instrument controlled by our bariatric surgeons that reduces the risk of human error during procedures. This system provides a better view of the surgical field and is capable of more precise movements than the human hand.
The result is better medical outcomes for our patients. With this surgical system, our doctors can minimize complications for safer surgery, shorten incisions for better cosmetic outcomes, and reduce downtime so you can get back to your life faster.
Another Reason to Choose Us:
Our Highly Trained Surgeons
Dr. Sergio Del Hoyo and Dr. Christian Ramirez have performed thousands of bariatric surgeries and have 50 years of combined experience. They can perform safe surgeries that get you the results you desire without complications. They are also members of many prominent medical associations, like the:
- Mexican Association of General Surgery
- American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery
- International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity
With Mexican, American, and international accreditation, you can expect safe, quality care from our surgeons.
Understanding Insurance in Mexico
Like many practices in Mexico, we don't accept medical insurance from American or Canadian providers. However, you may still pay less for your procedure without insurance than you would in your home country with insurance. This results in many patients choosing Mexico for everything from cosmetic surgery to gastric sleeve surgery.
Not From Mexico? No Problem! Virtual Consultations Are Available
We want bariatric surgery and medical care to be a viable option for patients, no matter where they're from. If you're curious about surgery, you can complete a free virtual consultation from the comfort of your own home. You'll only have to come to Puerto Vallarta, Jal., for your procedure.
"I had such a wonderful experience with Dr del Hoyo and his team. He dealt with all interactions personally never passing it off to reception. Every single questions was answered and every detail taken care of." Christie Leithead
Surgery in a Stunning Destination Turn Your Medical Tourism Into a Vacation
Your stay in Puerto Vallarta doesn't have to be strictly business. In fact, many of our medical tourists schedule time to explore the area and experience all it has to offer. A prime location in Mexico, Puerto Vallarta has stunning beaches, beautiful weather, an appreciation for the arts, and breathtaking sunsets. Some of our medical tourists even spend some of their time recovering on the beach.
FAQ About Medical Tourism
Can I bring my family with me?
Yes. Many patients bring their families along with them during their medical travel so they can have a short vacation together in Puerto Vallarta.
How does the medical travel process work?
To book your surgery date, you must pay a 10% down payment. When you arrive in Mexico, the Bariatrics Health Mexico team will transport you to your hotel. The next day, you will complete all preliminary tests at the hospital. You can then undergo your bariatric procedure. Your total payment is due on the day of your surgery. You will spend one night recovering in the hospital where medical staff can monitor you but can spend the rest of your time in your hotel room or on the beaches of Puerto Vallarta with your family.
How do I prepare for this kind of tourism?
Medical tourism is similar to regular tourism, in that you'll need to do a few things before you can come to us in Mexico. We recommend getting/updating your passport, acquiring Mexican pesos, and properly completing a Multiple Migratory Form, which may be provided to you by the airline.
Will I have help after my medical procedure?
Yes. Our patients have access to our nutritional counselors and can set up video calls with our team whenever they have questions. When you choose us for your care, you'll have an entire team of medical professionals on your side—you don't have to do it alone.
Why is accreditation important?
Accreditation with organizations like the ASMBS and IFSO are important because they prove a surgeon's dedication to patient safety and optimal treatment. For example, The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery requires members to be certified by a board and help contribute to their mission of elevating the standard of care for those impacted by obesity. Accreditation should be something you look for in the surgeon who will be performing your bariatric surgery. Our Medical Tourists Love Our Doctors
